Project Summary
Cartoon Orbit is a kid safe environment where cartoon lovers of all ages may collect and trade their favorite 'toons. The client, CartooNetwork, a division of Turner Networks, had engaged Viant to provide project management and experience design expertise to the project. The other two partners in the project were Funny Garbage, which focused upon the display layer, and Communities.com, which created the plug-–in which drove portions of the experience.
Goals
Sam Register, the Creative Director of CartooNetworks.com, put the goals simply, "It has to kick ass". It was to be the type of experience that "keep them up until 2:00 am playing the game". It was to be the type of online experience where word–of–mouth among the target population drove exposure. My team was focused upon experience design, information architecture, and creative development. While we had the skills to create the display layer, politically it was not feasible - that domain was strongly in the hands of Funny Garbage. Instead, we drove the design through crafting the experience which drove the IA which directed the schematics / wire frames. As such, Viant had a huge impact on the site and avoided wasteful conflict with the client and partners.
Challenges
The largest challenge was partner integration, communication, and cooperation. Secondary was maintaining clear division of duties and responsibilities of the partners so each group remained focused on their deliverable.
Results
Amazing. The original goals of Sam Register were meet and exceeded. Two years after launching, the site is still a top 100 destination. The original experience design work, IA, and wire frames are still very visible in structure of the site.
