The launch of verizon.com was a significant opportunity for Verizon (formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE) to establish its online brand. The site provided extensive functionality to registered users that was not previously available. The Flash tours was intended to support this launch.
The Flash tours were created to: Support the general launch of the site; Develop a positive brand impression; To increase overall awareness of site functionality, and; perhaps most importantly, drive registrations on the site
The Flash tours were describing functionality that was still in development. This development continued until literally hours before launch of the site. In essence, my team was building an airplane while flying it. The response to this challenge was to create multiple components, moviesinmovies, that could be easily swapped out as functionality evolved. Another significant challenge was to build interest in a subject that lacks a certain amount of "sizzle". My team created this interest through visual design and appropriate used of motion graphic techniques (e.g. blur, callouts, etc).
The Flash tours were launched in conjunction with verizon.com. Almost immediately they became a hit because they were referenced externally and internally as a "place to go" to learn more about the site and its capabilities. Senior Executives still use these tours to demonstrate the site to Wall street Analysts and other executive decision makers. The tours meet or exceeded all stated goals. Perhaps the greatest measure of success is that my team is now the defacto Flash design and development shop within Verizon.
